South St. Louis County Locals Try to Block New Masjid and Some Lessons for Muslims

A group of Bosnian Muslims in St. Louis who spent a significant amount of money have recently been denied a rezoning permit for the mosque and school they seek to build in the south St. Louis suburb of Lemay.

The story has been covered recently in the St. Louis media and is something a lot of people have approached me and asked me my thoughts on and first and foremost I will tell anyone that a house of worship is a benefit to any community and that I am upset that the local community has put up roadblocks; but, besides that, there are many other issues at play here.

We should not see the issue of the Lemay mosque by itself; rather we should see it in the context of other masjids that have had probelms with local governments and communtiy groups across the country. In Memphis, TN a Muslim graveyard was blocked after a right-wing radio talk-show host stirred up anger in the communtiy towards Muslims, in Northern Virginia the community made the masjid grow tall trees all around the premises so people would not know the building was a mosque, and in Boston it took several years for a new mosque to be built in the face of the opposition from a Pro-Israel group.

All of these cases, as is the case in St. Louis, are examples of anti-Muslim bigotry; because had this been any other religion other than Islam trying to establish a house of worship there would not have been such oppostion no matter what is said and everyone knows this while dancing around the issue, and the talk on the street in Lemay and amongst others in St. Louis reflects the anti-Muslim bigotry of those who reject the plans for a new mosque.

However, I want to also adress this issue from a Muslim perspective and an issue I have been looking at for years having to do with our decisions to build masjids where we do and the lack of understanding many Muslim groups often have about the society we live in.

There are some areas in the St. Louis area, just like any other metro area, that are more open-minded than others, some that are more affluent, some that are more economically depressed, and some that are more closed-minded and bigoted. As Muslims we can basically move into and operate in any of these areas described with relative ease with the excepetion of the closed-minded and bigoted areas, so it would be very wise for any Muslim group to study the area they are seeking to set roots in and make sure it is not such an area. In the case of this mosque, I will tell you absolutely 100%, that Lemay is known to be one of the most racist places in St. Louis.

Lemay is a lilly-white community made up of poor and working-class white people and, while there are a lot of hard working and decent folks in Lemay, it is also the home of a lot of meth dealing and other drug dealing, criminal activity, neo-nazi skinheads, and it is very common to see confederate flags being flown in Lemay and right-wing bumper stickers on trucks.

It was the misunderstanding and the misreading of the nuacnes of the local culture that led the Bosnian Muslim group to even consinder opening a mosque in such a location and they are not alone. Even though Muslims are much more likely to be accepted and not recieve problems in cities and are often welcomed by their neighbors; Muslims flock to the suburbs where people are much more likely to be conservative and anti-Muslim by their nature.

Aother group of local Muslims, Salafis to be exact, are opening a new masjid in South City just off of the South Grand pedestrian area, and not only are they not gettitng any problems from the local community, but the Aldderwoman of the neighborhood, Jennifer Florida, has said she will do whatever she can to help with the project. That is the difference between the culture of South Grand and Lemay and something that new Muslim immigrant groups may not be sophisticated enough to realize.

As Muslims we need to realize that in America we are often not alone but should compare ourselves to other groups who have had similar situations as us such as living as religous minorities in America, like Jews. Having the knowledge of this, Rick Isserman, and some affilaited with Temple Israel, a synagouge in the Western St. Louis suburb of Creve Coeur, took on the cause of the masjid and have become very active in this effort with the memory of the fight they had from the local community 5o years ago in their effort to buld a new synangouge ( which, today, is a pillar of the community).

Out of the bad of these events good can come such as the knowledge that Muslims and Jews can work together in America and we have a lot in common. The lesson can also be learned from people like St. Louis County Exectuitve Charlie Dooley, an African-American Democrat, who has said that he will do anything he can to help the Muslims and the silence of those in the GOP, and the lesson can be learned by Muslims about who our natural allies are, and who will always oppose us no matter how moderate we try and make ourselves.

  1. Abu Sinan Says:

I wonder what you said about picking the proper place to build a mosque relates to Dar al Hijrah?

I think your comments about the mosque with the trees was in relation to this mosque. I became a Muslim long after that mosque was built and moved to the area long after as well.

The area around Dar al Hijrah is very diverse and I didnt think it would be an issue, but like I said I dont know what the area was like before.

I was told by some brothers that I used to car pool to Jummah prayers with that the mosque had bought a plot of land across from the mosque and had planned to build a parking lot to releave the parking issue there (anyone who has gone there on a Friday afternoon will know what I mean).

I was also told some of the local residents have taken a firm stance against it and blocked it from being built. I do see that the plot is still just an empty field of grass.

Was there a similar history of contention around it as well?

May Allah help us bring understanding to our non-Muslim neighbors .

  3. Carlito Says:

Just curious, is there a large Bosnian population in that suburb?

Theoretically, they should be able to build a Masjid anywhere they want, but Ideally, they should build it where the people are.

  4. UmmZaid Says:

    Salaam ‘Alaikum

Why did they choose that neighborhood? Was it taxes, or what they could afford, or do they mostly live nearby? As long as we’re inventing professions in this community, perhaps a good one would be a masjid consultant. You know, these sisters (or brothers, whatever) could draw up demographic studies of the neighborhood, take the pulse of the locals before any land or buildings are purchased, reach out to religious and community leaders, etc. and present that to the search committee, so that they are making an informed decision.

But that might make sense, so…

  5. Sabir Says:

    UmmZaid,

That’s a really good idea. I’m not sure if there’s enough of a market for someone to set up an entire business or practice around providing consulting services for prospective masajid, but I think it would be a worthwhile endeavor for an umbrella organization (such as CAIR or ISNA) to undertake, and it would definitely have a lot of tremendously beneficial side effects as well (accurate demographic statistics about Muslims in America, easier coordination between masajid, outreach to newly converted/immigrated Muslims, etc). There are consulting firms that provide these kinds of services to chain stores, so perhaps ISNA could retain one and make its services available to the Muslim community.

  6. Umar Lee Says:

    UZ,

There are not a lot of Muslims in that area. There is a huge Bosnian population in St. Louis in South City and they are gradually moving out to the southern suburbs, but I do not think that Lemay is an area has that many, but it is not that far form where they live.

    Abu Sinan,

The area around DAH is diverse now, but that was not the case when it was first built, and they wanted them to grow trees, and even until this day the neighbors have what is called the Dar al Hijrah task Force dedciated to monitoring the masjid.

Good news. Muzzscum are vermin and vermin need to be exterminated.

The US will be muzzscum free very soon.

Time for open season on the muzzie.

  9. tammy swofford Says:

It certainly doesn’t help to see BBC print a picture of Pakistani Muslims burning the Union Jack or for the “latest news” hot off the press after the knighthood of Sir Salman Rushdie to be that another fatwa was issued against him, in response to the honour he received.

These are things the Muslim community must address. The distinct anti-West sentiment of many Muslims causes a counter-ripple response which is a natural, not an unnatural outcome of human behavior.

I do not agree with the previous post regarding “open season on the muzzie”. I consider it to be full of rhetoric which is distasteful.

But equally distasteful, is for the British ambassador to be hauled off and called to account in Pakistan, that there must be a “mutual understanding”. What is the mutual understanding? Is it that Britain cannot govern its own affairs in an autonomous manner? Is it that Islamic law superceded the laws and traditions of the British people?

Your community, will continue to face problems.

  10. Bang Gully Says:

Yes, but Tammy what does Muslims burning flags in London have to do with America? Do I fault all Americans for what American soldiers did and are doing to Iraqi and Afghanis? Should I hold you accountable for what other whites in other places have done? I don’t understand the logic of this. The vast majority of Americans Muslims contribute positively to this society. Also, what about Americans (white, black) that are Muslims? Are they no longer American and not deserving of their place of worship? Also, even the children of immigrant Muslims are becoming Americans and are assimilating. What more do you want from us?

  11. Rodan Says:

    Bang Gully,
    What do we want.
    Leave this country.
As a Hispanic it sickens me that you Muslims are treated better than we are.
I say kick you Dog haters out and bring in more Spanish people.
But it won’t happen because the Leftists Media supports the Islamic cause!
But one day, mark my words an Anti-Islamic movement will come to power.
Then White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Indian and Jewish Americans will unite against the Muslim Invbaders!
    Death to Allah(Lucifer)!

  12. Eliza Says:

Some villagers in Danbargo, Nigeria, left Islam and built a Christian church. The government declared it an illegal structure and demolished it. They also told the villagers if they did not return to Islam the government would confiscate their fields.

I once saw a mob of men on TV jumping up and down in a mosque in Detroit screaming “death to America!”

Non muslims in the ME take care not to walk by mosques on Fridays for fear of being assaulted by those who have listened to one of your famous kuffar cursing sermons.

You can’t burn our churches forever. Those mosques will make nice skating rinks.

  13. tammy swofford Says:

Merely saying that Islam has one big image problem. When Christians in Turkey are beheaded for running a Bible publishing company, it speaks volumes to people like me.

When Christian teenage girls in S.E. Asia are beheaded on their way to school and their heads left by a church, I also have a problem with that scenario.

Many Muslims in America have assimilated, are well-educated and productive members of society. But I do worry about the percentage in the recent poll results which support suicide bombing. It only takes one…. Which one is it?

    Tammy

  14. DrM Says:

I see the christo-fascist idiot brigade is back. Eliza the liar with church fairy tales(no doubt going to “scholarly” websites like WorldNutDaily and FrontPageRag for her conspiracy theories), and Tammy the warmongering hypocrite complaining about “suicide bombing” while supporting the murder of over 650000 Iraqis.
The irony is delicious. but the malodorous intent the same.

  15. Bang Gully Says:

Tammy, like I said that has nothing to do with us. Christians have done horrendous things, Americans do horrendous things, but it would not be fair for me to judge you as an American just because others who looked like you were doing bad things in your name (the murder of Iraqis is under America’s name).

Anyway, this will be my last comment because the trolls have come out from their villages and plan on burning down the castle.

  16. Eliza Says:

Killing the kuffar makes some sense, we are of course, the enemy. What I find remarkable is the muslim tendency to kill other muslims. Bravely killing unarmed students and hairdressers, holding banner of Islam high.
The other remarkable thing is that muslims apparently think they are above reproach, never do anything nasty - lies! all lies! plots! CIA! Mossad!
    Burst your bubble.

  17. Eliza Says:

One does not have to go to “nutnews” sites to find
stories of the gross oppression of non-muslims going on in muslim countries, or of the gross oppression of muslims as well.
Reports of mosques being used as hate factories or terrorist motels can be found also.
I like the Iranian websites. I bet nobody hates Islam like an Iranian.

  18. DrM Says:

Oh spare me, Eliza. Cite your sources(Shahi watan faroosh green carding the good life in the US are hardly a credible source), and get over yourself, you’re not important as you think you are, you’re a hate filled simpleton buying whatever bull stool the usual suspects ram down your throat. If you’re looking for hate filled sermons, turn on white trash talk radio or head on over to your pick of the litter, Armagedonist evengelical nutjobs eager for the Rapture acid trip. Or perhaps you prefer the messianic judeonazi scavengers living 5000 years in the past? I really don’t care.
Over 650000 dead Iraqis “liberated.” Get back to me when you find those fabled Iraqi WMDs, scum.

  19. Eliza Says:

Yes, the bull at the BBC is very good.
There is definitely enough hate to go around.
My source is usually the BBC. However you have a point, I should cite sources.
Who is living in the past? I thought the muslims had cornered that.
I have no dreams of self importance. Am simply surfing in search of amusement. I love the muslim Donald Duck routine.

  21. DrM Says:

Don’t lie Eliza, you and I both know that you don’t get your information from the BBC(hardly an Iranian “dissident” news source), but from far right websites run by neocon terrorists and conspiracy theorists. The same bastards who giddily supported the mass murder of innocent Iraqi civilians. Christ(a.s.) isn’t coming back to “rapture” you up, just ask Falwell who I hear is set on extra crispy these days in hell. Sorry dear, but the messianic christofascist tickle me Elmo just isn’t amusing.
Get off to crusader kool aid because its painfully obvious that your feeble “arguments” can be sourced back squarely to your rectum. Get back to me when you find those fabled Iraqi WMDs, scum.

  22. Eliza Says:

Your fantasies about me are so thrilling. I surf in search of loonies like you. Not because I am a Christian, but because I am a cartoonist. Long live Denmark. The bomb in your turban is showing.

The BBC does indeed report on oppression in muslim lands.

  23. DrM Says:

A cartoonist now? First a Christian fundie, now a unemployed cartoonist supposedly surfing for “loonies”(look in the mirror). Very convenient and chameleon like. I used to quite the artist myself before going for a real profession in medicine. I find that we have plenty of cartoonish freaks in real life, lying racist simpletons like you for instance.
The BBC(which I know you don”t use) reports on a wide variety of issue, not just news to justify to your hatred of Muslims. They also reported on the Lancet Journal of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health study on over 650000 dead Iraqi civilians, guess you missed that little headline. Your swastika is sticking out, shiksa.

  24. tammy swofford Says:

    Dr. M,
I probably know the rope of Allah better than most of your American Muslims. Ahadith? I go with the Saheeh of Muslim and Bukhari because their snad and matn are considered more accurate. Tafseer? I read it too.

For you may I suggest the following bit of advice?
    Al-Hujuraat 12

For those who plot evil: 99:8

For suicide bombers: Al-Hutamah is their portion as mentioned in al-Mulk 7 because remember: Innak antal Ghafoorur Raheem, and there is nothing very merciful about blowing up civilians, and these that profess Ibadah have surely done more than an atoms weight of evil.

    Tammy

  25. Eliza Says:

DrM are you a bombing set myself on fire type of doc? or a Doc Holliday doc?

Who you calling unemployed? This is my spare time.

Incredible. I tell him up front I am out to get his goat and still his goat is got.

  26. DrM Says:

Thanks for the amatuer attempt at teaching me my religion, Tammy, but cutting and pasting Hadith and using terms like isnad and tafseer doesn’t prove that you have any grip on the rope of Allah, it certainly doesn’t hide how disingenuous you are shedding crocodile tears over suicide bombing, a tactic I oppose.
Lets be honest, you have no problem with blowing up civilians. None whatsoever. You do it every day. Killing over 650000 Iraqis and then complaining about suicide bombing? You can’t be serious. Just like you’re not serious in your spin about that poll. In fact the Christian Science Monitor got some interesting results from their own poll. When asked if “bombing and other attacks intentionally aimed at civilians” are “often or sometimes justified,” 24% of all Americans agreed - three times the 8% of US Muslims who share that view. Read it and weep :

Now what kind of lying reality impaired nutjob are you? The wild eyed inbred hillbilly butter hog/trailer park type, or a primitive internet deviant high on the conspiracy crusader kool aid? Slither back to LGF.

and that’s something you can’t say about a muzzie.

  32. DrM Says:

    Yawn. Broken record.

  33. Eliza Says:

After several years now of reading the news, bits of the Koran, hadiths, bios of Mo, and the words of the muslims themselves, in particular the comical attempts to make a 7th century Arab bandit seem like a beacon of purity and compassion, I too have developed a contempt for Islam and would not welcome a mosque in my neighborhood.

  34. your mom Says:

Why not just abandon your worthless religion and quit building stupid mosques? No one in america wants more muslims. just leave if life in the cess pool of the middle east is so superior. abandon your culture and adopt west culture and get on with your life. Maybe your next generations of women won’t have the clits cut off you backwards fucktards.

  35. fairuzamizna Says:

If I based my opinion of Islam solely from Fox News sound bites, I would be contemptful of Islam as well.

Nothing unexpected from the supporters of anglo-american terrorists, the lowest parasites on the planet, who ought to hung from trees. Personally I always liked a little salt on my cracker.

  39. Eliza Says:

In the 80’s my brother had a muslim neighbor who had to travel to the ME sometimes on family business. He groaned with fear each time, and said he was afraid of “all the fanatics” there.

What, we said, what fanatics. He explained that there were violent muslim groups killing other muslims for various religious differences.

  40. fairuzamizna Says:

    DrM

I know, I know….but every now and then you HAVE to toy with them…. just for fun.

  41. Eliza Says:

I am striking up conversations with muslims, right here. What do I see? Silly assumptions and obscene insults. Here’s hoping I never meet any of you on the street.

  42. fairuzamizna Says:

    yoo-hoo, Eliza! Still there?

    Silly ASSUMPTIONS and OBSCENCE insults?

Here are some of YOUR UN-insulting and UN-obscene comments (yeah right):

“Those mosques will make nice skating rinks.”

“Killing the kuffar makes some sense, we are of course, the enemy.”

“I surf in search of loonies like you.”

“The bomb in your turban is showing.”

“He groaned with fear each time, and said he was afraid of “all the fanatics” there.”

    Dr. M,

Still alive and kicking? MashAllah… I feel guilty reading your post sometimes. Youre bad.

  44. TGS Gal Says:

As a resident of Tower Grove South, and as a new Muslimah, I welcome the building of a Mosque, and cringe at the hate embedded within these posts-from both sides. As someone wishing to learn Islam, it is a bit intimidating here in the US. It’s actually nice to see how it feels to be a minority now–as a white female–I’ve never felt this much hatred. This will make me stronger and Insha’Allah better as I learn my way. I won’t even wear a hijab yet, because of all the hate and prejudice I see here in STL. Soon, however, I’ll stand tall and proud-despite the haters and what they say.

  45. custom4173 Says:

    Dr. M
Your expressions of hate and extreme intolerance of anyone who disagrees with you are a perfect demonstration of why western people default to a distrust of Islam. This distrust would seem to be the most logical state of mind.
Statements by Muslim clerics nearly always show the same intolerance. How often have we seen a high ranking Muslim cleric publically condemning radical behavior?

  46. DrM Says:

Custom, either you are blind or you’re a typical right wing cherry picker. I have intolerance towards bigots, liars, and low lives like Eliza and company. If you disrespect me, I will most certainly respond in kind, as I don’t give a rats behind what racists think.
Stop making false statements and pretending to be victims. Imams have been condemning terrorism for years, while you support it. Iraq being a prime example. To call you disingenuous would be an understatement.

  47. your mom Says:

please wear your hijab so i can know who the idiots are.

  48. Eliza Says:

Tsk, tsk, you have been cherry-picking my words and quoting me out of context. Furthermore they have been translated from my original Cassandrian. You will have to learn Cassandrian first before you can appreciate their truth and beauty.

I leave you with a muslim’s words from altmuslim.com: “We are an annihilating ummah with utopian delusions.”

  49. DrM Says:

Yo mama, wear your swastika openly so I can justify my collision insurance. LoL
I don’t need to cherry pick your comments, Eliza. You lied, and kept lying, its all here for everyone to see, including your cherry picked “quote” from Altmuslim, which I doubt even exists. You’re a broken record, slither back to your trailer. Get back to me when you find those WMDs, skank.

  50. Eliza Says:

    From altmuslim.com:

I was listening to these famous African footballers speaking about how as Africans we don’t get inspired enough by ourselves. That there is enough mass sentiment to do whats right but not enough conviction and passion amongst us as people to follow through on an emancipated life. They didn’t say it exactly, but thats what they said. Divided amongst ourselves and united in mass self pity.

Musharraf is a military dictator and Pakistan is a turbulent country and we are an annihilistic Ummah with Utopian delusions. They had it coming. We all do.

  53. custom4173 Says:

    Kam,
You’ve just hit upon the primary problem with immigrant Islam. The more devout/extreme Muslims do not believe secular law of the country in which they are living applies to them.

Hmmm. Conversations with Muslims? I had a lovely friendship with a Muslim who told me that a woman who jumped from the Tower on 9/11 and fell like a rag doll to her death was in hell for committing suicide.

In hell? Weren’t there already flames at her back? Could someone please explain that level of illogical reasoning to me?

I am not trying to stir things up, merely stating a fact of what a Salafi Muslim told me. This was not a “cabbie” but a PhD scholar.

Should the Ummah engage a bit of repentance over such things? Just wondering.

    Tammy

  57. Eliza Says:

Okay, I have one more all knowing message:

There are some Christians and Jews who might also condemn the jumping lady, although in the middle ages the church made a dispensation citing this very situation, fleeing from fire.

At first I thought muslims were worshipping the God of Abraham, now I doubt it. However, they show a devotion which is pleasing.

Their devotion to Mohammad is absurd. Even a slight reading of his bios show that he is not a role model for any but a violent man.

If one is annoyed with the structure of Christianity one could become an anti-trinitarian, “red-letter” Christian, concentrating on what Jesus said rather than the ongoing fruitless debate about what he was.

It is amazing to me that a man appeared, said 6 or 7 things, and without ever apparently riding a horse or waving a sword, changed the world.

  58. DrM Says:

I wonder about DrM myself. What kind of a person get’s off on disrespecting others in an anonymous setting like the internet?

I’d have to say a coward. I doubt he talks to people like that in real life, but i suppose the internet may prove an appropriate outlet for his pent up aggression and rage. At least online he can say whatever he wants to anyone without facing any consequences.

But seriously, based on past “debates” with him, i can tell you he’s a nut. Just don’t judge the rest of the people who read his blog by his crazy behavior, there are more then a few very reasonable Muslims who present their ideas here on a regular basis.

One thing i’ve noticed is that he uses the term slither to refer to the behavior of those who he disagrees with on a regular basis. To me this outlines his black and white view of the world - as in those on his side are fine while everyone else is delegated to the level of snakes.

I mostly ignore him, he’s like a young kid with an attitude problem - the more attention you give that kind of behavior, the more you reward him with any type of acknowledgment the more he acts out.

personally i think a failure to develop intellectually and emotionally lies at the core of his random aggression online, but it’s hard to say since i don’t really know him.

Not that i would want to.

I’m not so sure about St. Louis, but in general Michigan has been quite a welcoming place for Muslims in the USA, in my experience. Also northern/northeastern Illinois, a few parts of Minnesota. But Michigan definitely is the core of the American Muslim community.

Native-born African-American, Arab, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Indian, Iranian, Turkish, Bosnian and other Muslim groups, I’ve found to flourish in Michigan. There are few hassles getting mosques approved or acquiring funding for them, Muslim youth community groups are supported, even halal in the schools is allowed.

I’ve certainly found Michigan to be a much better place to practice than for example California, Texas or Florida, where I’ve been and things have generally fizzled.

Boozedpengo, you really shouldn’t project your insecurities at your betters. Its funny watching you and your fellow haters play victim. Take your anti-Muslim nonsense and slither back to LGF. Stop being so disingenuous and get sober.

  62. BoozePenguin Says:

    DrM

Accurately describing you as hostile online is not tantamount to any sort of anti–muslim statement what so ever.

I am judging you based on your behavior, I’m not passing any sort of rash judgment on Islam based on your behavior, and it’s a good thing too.

You see, i view people hostile with strangers online as fundamentally weak and insecure. Unless you speak to others like this in real life you use the internet as a sort of shield. You are anonymous here and can say what you like, however you like without facing any real life repercussions for you’re disrespect. You would be too afraid to speak to others like this in real life. The internet protects you by hiding you, and i view that to be fundamentally cowardly behavior.

Second, i view those who resort to ad hominum attacks as fundamentally weak and insecure regarding the strength of their own ideas. You have to attack my mental state and sobriety because you simply have no response to my previous statements regarding your behavior. I assure you again, as i have many times before that i am very much a sober individual. The name is a reference to a piece of art done for a band’s website. I found the art to be humorous, and decided to use the name for my online interactions, since my ideas are judged on their own merit by reasonable people - not the tag i use online.

Listen, i know what your response will be. You are like a broken record, always the same ad hominum attacks. But listen, any reasonable individual, muslim or otherways will be able to recognize you for the disrespectful, insecure, bigot you are.

You’re religion has nothing to do with anything. You would be just as much of an asshole if you grouped yourself with any other religious community.

I know its popular these days, but pop psychology isn’t your forte, boozed pengo. Your state of mind has to be questioned because you’ve been unable to string a coherent thought together. You’re more of a disingenuous sycophant. Its interesting that you find me “offensive” yet are no where to be found when “rodan” and his crew of mental defects pontificate about “exterminating Muslims.” What a charlatan feigning outrage at my “ad hominem” attacks.
This is like those firemen who committed arson in hopes of being called to put out the fires, and become heroes. Heroism, first and foremost requires courage and honesty. You have neither attributes, and are in fact a lowly racist coward born. Crying crocadile tears for Iraqis one minute, and then blaming them the next really does show how much of a disingenuous degenerate you truly are.
Drop the pretensions, and embrace your inner drink soaked bigot.

ALL Muslims have one mindset regardless of what they tell you. Push comes to shove and they will all react and think alike. They want to take over this country and adopt Sharia Law for all of us. They are doing it little by little!! We need to get them OUT of this country.

I was born and raised in America. You get out, I’m going no where.
