I've finally decided to upgrade from my built-in-tv audio to surround sound. However since this is not for a home theater and only my bedroom I don't need some amazingly nice system. I'm hoping to keep it less than 200. Is this a possibility?
How's this one? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1183160719230
based on what i can find out about it (can't find a picture of the back) it seems it has no "audio in" connections....meaning that you won't be able to get the PS3 to play through the speakers...
the problem with cheaper "home theater" systems is that they are usually based around a DVD player that moonlights as a receiver/amp....they usually have VERY limited input/output options.....
what you need is a receiver/speaker combo....and for less than $200 you are VERY limited....or you need to start looking at maybe some of the logitech speaker setups that have optical inputs on them.....
if you want real surround sound then you need to look for something with either HDMI "in" or optical "in"
Good choice, in deciding to upgrade from tv speakers that is. Not so much for what you linked. I'd suggest since its going to be in your bedroom, maybe start out with a 2.1 setup and see how it suits you. You can always add center and surround later if you want. You'll notice an increase in SQ just by adding external fronts and a subwoofer. Getting anything decent for less than $200 is going to be very hard. I'd suggest saving for the the Sony STR-DG720. It pairs nicely with PS3 because the PS3 can send lossless audio to the receiver. It's $300 msrp so you can probably find it for less. Then get two front speakers and a sub. Even with cheap speakers it will cost you about $500 maybe plus or minus $50 for the amp, fronts and sub. That will probably be miles ahead of any HTiB though.
Ok guys, thanks for the help. I Have an employee discount at best-buy that a friend is going to let me use so maybe I can go for something more expensive.

hopefully later tonight ill have a chance to sit down and ill go through the best buy site and see if i can find something for you that fits as close to your budget as possible....
do you know what BB's employee discount is? so i can factor that into my decision...
Best Buy doesn't have a % off type of discount. They have "Whatever best buy gets it for plus 5%"
Very True. But most of their home theatre is marked up about 30%, unless it is their own insignia, dynex, rocketfish brand, than they just make a raking.
A little over $200, but WELL WORTH the price IMO. Btw, Phillips... unless I'm completely wrong I don't recall them being a great or acclaimed speaker company.
Also, if you eventually get an HDTV, even small ones I think, have optical outputs on them so you can hook these up to it.
